Industrial
Heritage Zone
Linking Past & Future
With the site’s industrial roots and important interface with rail integrated as a foundational big move, the redevelopment proposal for Brewery-Rail Lands includes heritage management, potential for adaptive reuse of industrial structures where feasible and the continuation of light-industrial activity in a modern urban format. The experiential component of Rail Trail Park as a mobility corridor and the retention of industrial uses will play significant roles in the integration of identified heritage structures, especially through the incorporation of what we’re calling the ‘Industrial Heritage Zone’.
Committed investments into the preservation and integration of multiple heritage assets will be confirmed through legal agreements, as well as referenced in the applicable Land Use Bylaw and policies for Council approval. Organized around the centrally located Brewery Flats Park and high quality pedestrian-oriented streets, the Industrial Heritage Zone Concept integrates key heritage assets with new development and establishes greater connectivity with the existing community and commercial areas.
Heritage Inventory Evaluation
As part of Brewery-Rail Lands land use and outline plan application review process, individual Heritage Inventory Evaluations were performed and approved by Heritage Calgary on December 18, 2023, for the Administration Building, Boiler House & Smokestack, and Engine Room & Water Well.
